Temple

I ended up with some sweet free time during my Utah trip .... This afternoon my mother in law and I attended the Oquirrh Mountain Temple.

Oh my WORD! It is a gorgeous temple! The view is magnificent, and the feeling, as in all the temples, is unmatchable. Inside is indescribable. I so enjoyed this afternoon building memories with Brad's mom in this heavenly place!

Senior picture time, so Sierra grabbed her professional camera and drug Bryan along.

I don't have a clue why Bry is so reticent about having his picture taken.

These few photos are proof that he's not only gorgeous, but oh-so-photogenic!

Bryan is in all AP and a couple of Honors classes. He's acing them. Which proves not only that he's killer smart (we've known that forever) but that this year he's also very self-motivated.

Yeah, he'll be 18 soon, but Bryan is still the*most*tender*hearted*person in. the. world.

With Sierra gone for so long, it's not only quieter, but a little lonely too ... Can't wait to get her home.

Last night Bryan made Stuffed halibut ...YUM. We've divided up nights for cooking, and much to my delight, Bryan took 2 nights (if only he'd take my two nights too!).

Azure looked so cute coming home from church today that I jut had to snap a photo.

Other news this week: I'm definitely getting acclimated to my job. And the kids and I got some good school shopping in. They're all set look great and take notes!

I'm Back!

It's about time I update, dontcha think?

In the 6 weeks I've been AWOL lots has happened.

I am now an employed woman. I am the Marketing Director for ASL Communication. It is the perfect job for me, as it allows me to work a whole lot from home, or from whatever location I may be at, and it actually requires that I travel regularly to Utah (oh darn! I'll have to stay with my family there!) When I'm not researching and setting things up from home, I'm visiting with clients and potential clients, taking gifts to them, buying them lunch, and basically schmoozing. LOVE IT! (Plus, this job has motivated me to learn ASL. Thankfully my parents are signers and this past 10 days I've been tutored by my mom!)

I've also spent some time with a lot of my extended family this past little while. I've been with kids and grandkids, inlaws, and with my parents in Texas. It's been a blissful month and a half.

Meanwhile, my motivational blog, Silver Strands, is really thriving. I feel like Silver Strands is the raft that is taking me on my divine current.

Today Bryan completed his Duty to God and even had his Bishop's interview. Our 17-year-old is a motivated young man who makes us very proud.

A big thanks to my Mother-in-law who has motivated me to get back to the family blog. I've committed to her that this will be updated at least every Sunday.

Sunday afternoon ...

Bry's in Texas with the Calls for his cousin's Eagle Court

so it's been just Dad & the girls.

Today when the sacrament hymn started and the priests realized there was no bread ...

the drama unfolded. I have to admit I was distracted.

I watched as the YM pres zipped out to find bread,

then found my thoughts wandering to where he would find it ~ the freezer? the closest member? the family with lots of kids who probably brought bread?

Finally I let go of my secular thoughts and listened as our organist played, and played some more. When he switched to "I Need Thee Every Hour" I found myself completely in tune and grateful for the prolonged sacrament service. This week it took an extra several minutes for me to do what I should do every week. Ponder on the Atonement.

This week I'm grateful for forgotten bread.

Keyhole Canyon Adventure

While Denalee was in Dallas, we went out to Keyhole Canyon on a Saturday afternoon. It was a beautiful day. We had a great time climbing around on the granite cliffs photographing Native American rock art.

We spotted several Chuckwalla lizards and Bryan decided to try to catch this one.

SUCCESS!! We were so proud of Bryan. Catching a lizard with your bare hands takes concentration and nerves of steel.

I've so enjoyed being home with everyone

Caci and Jace. Wow - I've missed them!

They've been in the Ukraine for a couple of months.

Trevor will be joining them here in two short weeks.

If Brooke & Steve can make it, we'll all be together for a couple of days.

OH HOW I LOVE HAVING EVERYONE TOGETHER!

My time with my parents was so, so precious.

But it's also wonderful to be back home.

Isn't she gorgeous?!!! This is my Mom yesterday.

I'm reminded of a song Brad wrote years ago

"Time flies ... old days and old ways pass by;

but love stays, and all our faded memories never die"

it goes on, but as I sit here in my parents' house,

sometimes looking at an old photo from my childhood or theirs,

sometimes playing games,

sometimes just watching them ...

at times I'm transported back to being a child,

other times I'm enjoying the moment of being in the presence of two incredible human beings who (thankfully) are my parents.

This is an amazing experience for me.

I plan to soon compile a list of lessons learned on this trip.

For now, let me say that I am one blessed individual.

And not just because I have a mini-fridge (completely stocked) in my room;

or because Dad makes gourmet breakfasts for us;

or because I can take anything from the candy-bar at anytime

But because I get to be my parents' child.

I'm completely enjoying my time alone with my parents.

There are 6 of us kids, so time alone with them is really precious - even as adults.

Here's how we've spent some of that time:

Mom & I went to the wig shop and got matching hats.
The night I arrived I cut off the rest of my Mom's hair ... no, she didn't NEED to be in a straight-jacket for it, but it was a lot more fun that way :)

Dad not only made an AMAZING Sunday dinner, but his presentation ... well, it was a feast for the eyes!

You know how people have "wet bars"?

I leave early tomorrow morning

for a 10-day visit with my parents in Texas.

I'm so excited to spend time with them!

We' plan to spend Saturday having fun

Then it's my hope that I'll be able to relieve some of Dad's duties and even some of his concerns as I help care for Mom.

Ahhhhh how I love my family!

Mother's Day was amazing. Brooke & Steve totally surprised us with their visit, arriving middle of the night Wednesday.

Bryan always works to make my days special. He's usually the chef, but had a break this mother's day.

A couple of hours after getting home from church I walked into my room to see that Azure had cleaned it for me. Then she gave me a gorgeous bouquet of flowers picked from our yard.

Sierra's just an all-around sweetiepie. She made sure I was completely comfortable.

This was Brooke's 1st mother's day as a mommy, but she still insisted on doing things for me. This cake was AMAZING.

And Trevor & Caci sent pearls from Hong Kong.

(can't wait to get them back here!)

Of course, Brad was incredible. Equally lovely was the time we had with our own mothers on the phone.

I am blessed.

not really a flattering shot, but you get the idea ... when I'd tire of reading, I'd just relax with the cool ocean breeze, warm sun, and made sure to keep myself semi-covered to prevent aging :)

Our kids and some other family gave us a cruise to celebrate our anniversary.... here is our cruise in pictures

(more to come when Brad brings his camera home from work!)

embarking ... getting on was WAY easier than getting off!

it was straight to the dessert bar for me :)

before the ship even took off we played a round of miniature golf on the top deck ... if you're wondering, it was a tie :)

we were given a private table

while at dinner, the room stewards turn down the bed, leave mints and a cute towel creature

day 2 was on Catalina Island, but we used Brad's camera that day - so this is day 3 in Ensenada Mexico. The vendors ... oh man! ... they were AGGRESSIVE!

La Bufadora (the blowhole) there are only 3 in the world, Ensenada, Hawaii, and Australia. If I understand correctly, the cave causes pressurization so when the waves come in it blows the water 30 - 100 feet in the air. It was gorgeous!

my favorite thing.

After drinking the coconut milk, he cuts a bigger hole, scoops the meat away from the shell, chops it into bite-sized pieces, then puts that chili sauce you see, freshly squeezed limes, and sea salt all over it. i CRAVE more of this!

our bus got a flat tire on the way back from La Bufadora. Conveniently, it happened in front of this cute little tamale shop. I'm not a tamale lover, but these were super-YUM

back at the pier in Ensenada, these are california sea lions hauled out on the docks

Isn't this amazing?! This pelican just sat there and posed for me!

The trip was a lesson in relaxation and bonding. Brad and I spent much of our time on the upper back deck, in and out of the hot tub and soaking up sun while reading. The breeze was cool enough that we never got hot. It was so comfortable. We had some really nice talks together and it was MUCH needed time alone together.

I did the whole body process thingy again yesterday and

I'm "normal" ... it said that I'd lost 4.6 lbs in one day.

So because I know that can't be true

I suppose my subconscious couldn't let it go...

because while sleeping I realized I told the machine to add 2 lbs because of my clothes

(rather than to subtract 2 lbs)

this means ... I actually

LOST .6 lbs in one day

not 4.6

but who cares? I'm now normal :)

I was going to wait till after our cruise to start up,

but the kids talked me into it tonight.

Imagine my horror when I thought it said I needed to lose 25 lbs!

I saw the tissue aisle and immediately grabbed a box that looked like they wouldn't chap my nose

(but not without a snide comment from Brad about our house being overtaken by kleenex)

I have to admit that I didn't pay much attention to the brand

till I got home and used one

much to my delight - as I wiped away a sniffle

my sinuses cleared!

nope - no one's paying me to write this.

i just really love how i feel after wiping my nose now!

Brad took me to Death Valley yesterday

WHAT A TREAT!

First let me say, Brad is an EXCEPTIONAL guide.

He's really in his element when guiding people through nature.

I can ask Brad anything about nature and 99% of the time he knows the answer.

We spent Wednesday night in the company apartment in Pahrump

and got up bright & early to begin our adventure.

Of course, he was actually working, so we had others to pick up and take along.

But that didn't change the magical experience it was!

Before I give the blog over to photos to tell the story, let me just say that being in Death Valley in the spring really is magical ... but being in Death Valley in the spring with Brad as the guide - well, that's perfection!

Here you go:

some of the fluff had fallen off, so I picked it up ... it really did feel like cotton balls!

Brad at work... I know - it's a tough job, but someone has to do it!

Desert 5-point

yup - it's a real scorpion

this stuff is really neat ... it's called "dodder" and is a parasite plant that feeds off of other desert plants. It's incredibly moist and grows for only a couple of weeks in early spring. Yes, it's edible, and the taste is bland... just crunchy & moist. Brad thinks it would be great in a salad. (I just did some reading up on dodder and it's a horrid parasitic weed that steals nutrients from other plants. So no more praise for dodder!)

Don't know what this is called, but WOW! It's beautiful and fragrant.

This was an amazing site ... Brad called these purple mats - and that's exactly what it looked like. The hillside looked as if it had been carpeted in purple.

This was a Racetrack Playa tour. Look up Racetrack Playa to learn about it - it's remarkable. This rock made this track by being blown across the floor after a rain.

Last night was wonderful.

The girls and I attended the

Young Women General Broadcast

then ate dinner together with the rest of those in attendance.

We capped the night off with a fun little shopping trip to Marshalls.

The conference was amazing.

Every talk was inspirational.

Today the girls and I decided to each write a blog post about some aspect of the conference.

I chose a segment of Sister Dalton's talk.

She talked about beauty. Real beauty. I wish I'd have written this down so I could quote her exactly, but she said something like:

"Having His Image in your countenance ... that's real beauty. That's lasting beauty."

She told about visiting President and Sister McKay in their home when she was a student at BYU and how beautiful Sister McKay was. She told us her beauty is the kind that can't be purchased, it can't be surgically implanted, it can't be painted on. It comes from having the Holy Ghost in your life and following the promptings of the Spirit.

I'm walking away from the computer now to write on the kids' bathroom mirror.

It's going to say:

Mom is on my mind.

This story below shows what a great Mom I have.

She was great when I was little, and she's great now.

The Silver Dollar Tree

Madison Elementary School was just across the street and through a field from our home. I was just 6-years-old and in a combined 1^st & 2^nd Grade class. Mrs. Wadlow was one of those teachers a child idolizes and never forgets. I still have the broken china horse and buggy she let me pick out from her gifts for students one year. The last time I corresponded with Mrs. Wadlow was right before my mission. I sent her a letter telling of my mission call; she sent a congratulations letter. When I returned from my mission I sent her a letter only to have it returned. I suspect she had passed away. Every day in Mrs. Wadlow’s class was enjoyable. After school I’d saunter through the field on my way home, often stepping off the path to pick up a horney-toad or examine a lone flower growing in the dry field of dirt. One day on my way home I took in the beauty of a young tree. The leaves seemed to shimmer as the breeze passed by and I found myself wanting to look at the tree forever. Although just a little tree, I knew it was way too big for me to dig it up and take home. So I determined to grow one of my own.

Plucking a leaf from this magical looking tree I hurried home to share the good news with my mother. I told her I really, really wanted my own sparkling tree, and asked for a little plot of dirt in our yard to plant it. Mom took me out to the breezeway, handed me a spoon and showed me where to dig. Years later I asked my mom why she didn’t tell me that you can’t grow a tree from a leaf. Her response: “Who am I to say what can and can’t happen with enough faith?” I prayed over that little leaf every day, knowing that it is Heavenly Father who created the leaf, and He would create my new tree. I remember taking a cup of water to the breezeway each day before school to water my leaf. Each day after school, I’d zip home to check on my tree. Every prayer I said included a request for blessings on my tree. One day I was rewarded. A sprout was shooting up right where I had been watering each day. Excitedly, I called to Mom as I ran into the house. My tree was finally growing! I would have my own tree that would glisten in the breezeway! My tree became my project. Daily I’d water the little seedling. Weeks passed, then months. Finally one day the plant started to get leaves of its own. Much to my mother’s amazement, this little plant really was a silver dollar tree! My leaf was now a tree. Now, more than 40 years later, I sit at the computer reading up on silver dollar trees. While searching the internet for “how to propagate a silver dollar tree” it’s clear that one must have a root-cutting for a new tree to grow. I suspect my mother already knew that you must start with a rooted plant … but because of her wisdom and her nurturing spirit, she not only provided the spoon and the plot, but she provided the encouragement and support necessary for a young girl’s faith to be exercised and grown.

I'm really happy that the Church opened up Personal Progress to mothers and other women in the Church. Here's why:

I've had some things in the back of my mind

that I've been wanting to accomplish for quite some time.

I've just felt like I haven't had the time ...

(isn't that always the case?)

Well, Personal Progress is the motivation I need to actually get to these tasks.

Here's an example of some of my long-delayed goals:

* transcribe my missionary journal, print out copies and have them bound for my kids

* do a will (yup ... I've had statements of wishes, but no will)

* finish my book (details to come at some later date)

... and lots, lots more.

Added benefit:

Each day carries lots of purpose for me.

I'm now not just doing the must-do-mundane and trying to do something worthwhile each day. Rather I absolutely accomplish something (often somethingS) worthwhile every day!

How grateful I am for inspired leaders!

Part of Sierra's 16th birthday celebration

included a night on the strip to see Australia's Human Nature

(amazing performance ... I highly recommend it!)

When Valet drove up in our car and we all climbed in, I was bummed to see I could exit only one way - opposite of the way I wanted to go.

If you know me well, you know I'm a direction-infant. I simply cannot navigate very well.

But I did know that I could get on one freeway at one end of the strip, and another freeway at the other --- all roads lead home. One way just takes longer.

So, as I turned the wrong way on Las Vegas Blvd, I glanced down to see the fuel light on.

I knew when we left home I needed to get gas, but was having so much fun with the girls that I honestly forgot. Yikes! No gas, going the wrong way, on a bumper-to-bumper street.

I asked Az if she'd say a prayer that we make it to a gas station.

She did.

As soon as everyone said "amen" Carli said:

"Hey look! The gas light went off!"

*phewie*

Gratefully, we drove along the strip hoping for a gas station.

Nope - not a one in sight.

So with the gas light still off, we got on the freeway and headed toward home.

Got off at our exit, knowing there was a gas station there.

We pulled into the gas station and as we pulled right up to the pump, we all watched as the gas light popped on.

This incident came just 2 days after the girls and I worked on 2 faith requirements for personal progress.

raw meatloaf ... smoke alarm ... PSHAW!

in preparation for our big Relief Society Birthday Party

last night,

I found a great meatloaf recipe from cracker barrel

to feed 42.

perfect! i just doubled the recipe

then divided it into 4 big pans for sisters to cook and bring.

i made the centerpieces from dollar-store base & windmill ... flowers from lowes. total cost: $3 each!

the recipe got rave reviews on the site, so it seemed like a safe bet.

apparently the cooking time was very wrong!

we had meatloaf arrive RAW

so we cranked the ovens up to 400 and filled them with meatloaf;

changed the program to do the games and activities 1st

to give the meatloaf time to cook.

mid-way thru the evening every smoke alarm in the building went off

and trust me:

those are LOUD alarms!

our nursery filled with about 20 kids and a half dozen high priests

zipped out to the parking lot;

the other ward's scouts and YW, although seemingly confused, appeared to carry-on in their respective rooms ... while we scrambled wildly to open every door,

turn on every fan, and grab whatever we could

to fan the smoke out of the building.

our YM and their leaders were there to serve us and managed the airing out of the kitchen

of course, this is the night we invited our bishopric, our YW

AND

the stake rs presidency

BUT WE WOULD NOT BE THWARTED!

we had nearly 70 people in attendance

and the night was filled with fun

the young women seemed to mingle well with all of us old women

and the young men were AMAZING as our servers

but i can't say i'm not glad it's over :)

The girls and I read this today while we were working on personal progress together outside in our perfect weather....

spent the morning helping some friends move -

then came home to make plans.

We made our plans while sitting in lawn chairs

in the back yard ...

and after making the plans

I continued to sit, and relax

and soak it all in.

So nice!!!

Thanks to my sweet sister, Jen, I spent the weekend in Colorado.

I was there to celebrate her son's Eagle Scout rank advancement

and her grandson's blessing.

Diane is Jennilyn's daughter. She & Andy had lots of people show up to celebrate, including Andy's parents and brother and cousin, Diane's entire family, her Grandma Eckersley, my brother, parents and myself. A pretty good showing!

This was really neat ... Eric's Grandma Eckersley, and Grandma & Grandpa Call were there to see his rank advancement. (PS - aren't my parents gorgeous?!)

And although I did indeed celebrate those events,

mostly I basked in the comfort of being my parents' child and my siblings' sister.

I don't think any of us can count the hours we spent playing

ticket to ride

I come from a game-playing-family so this was amazingly fun and relaxing

I had to put this picture in just because :)

... Dad, Darryn & I were in the church entry dutifully waiting for everyone else to arrive so we could take family pictures with the many, many people who showed up for little Steven Christopher Sheafor's blessing ...

it's pretty fun ... and a way to get a few bucks

and sometimes some free stuff.

like chocolate.

today I mystery shopped at ethyl's in henderson

it's a really neat place - right next to a huge cactus garden

to get to the actual chocolate store you walk thru hallways where you can look thru the glass to watch the chocolate being made.

it's neat.

and the chocolate is tasty.

but let's compare:

i lived for 12 years in beautiful sitka, alaska

home of

theobroma chocolate

(food of the gods)

theobroma has less variety

but is also less expensive.

AND

they offer unlimited samples :)

so:

both tasty

but unlimited samples???!!!

I remember the "Parents Fireside" in 1987 when President Benson presented this address: To The Mothers in Zion

We were students at the University of Utah. I went away with renewed determination to spend not just quality time, but quantity time with my children.

After reading this quote today, I'm going to rededicate myself to making time for each of my children.

And, being my parents' child, I know that we never stop needing our mothers. So my determination extends to my grown children. They may not get amazing gifts, or financial support or big vacations. But they'll continue to get emails and phone calls and prayers on their behalf.

I love my children.

President Obama was here in Henderson yesterday.

In fact, he was at Green Valley High School ...

just a hop, skip and a jump away.

Although I'm not jumping on the bandwagon and waving President Obama banners, I have to say that after watching and hearing his interaction with fellow Henderson-ites, I really like him. In that setting, it felt like there was nothing to prove, no one to win over, no typical politician actions. He seemed to genuinely care about and relate to us.

So let me add this:

With the exception of 1 US President

I believe we've had amazing men of strong character and good hearts running our country. I believe they've acted according to conscience and have done their best to lead righteously. I believe our prayers in their behalf are vital and that prayers, without words and actions joining in, are hypocritical and useless.

Let's pray for our President, recognize the good he is working for, and take whatever actions our conscience tell us to.

My Grandma ... Lida Perry Call

This picture is how I remember my Grandma Call best.

This was taken when she was 90 years old ...

she was almost 97 when she died.

Isn't she beautiful?!

In my memory, Grandma was always quilting. My strongest memories of Grandma are from 1977 - 1978. I was going to Ricks College and Grandpa & Grandma lived near Idaho Falls. I visited them on occasion, but when Grandpa passed away and Grandma was living alone I spent almost every weekend with her. As soon as I'd walk in her house I'd be offered some homemade ginger-snaps. Then we'd sit down at a quilt and visit and listen to CNN. Later each night we'd play a game of Scrabble. I slept in Grandma's guest room. Early in 1978 I got pretty sick - One night at Grandma's house I was coughing so much I guess I was keeping her awake. In she walked with a spoonful of something and strongly suggested I take it. It would quiet my cough, she said.

I found out later it was cayenne pepper and honey.

It about killed me.

But I didn't cough the rest of the night :)

This is a quilt my Grandma made. This is how amazing she is: While living with my aunt in Arizona she slept in a room that let in too much sun and too much heat. So she just "whipped up" this amazing window covering.

I'm excited to start attending a local book group where this book will be discussed

Saturday Bryan and I saw

I've read all the Percy Jackson books, thanks to Bry

and thoroughly enjoyed the movie

(I don't care what the critics say)

I wish they'd make the Twilight movies as well ... they look low-budget to me

no sleep would be ok if a headache didn't accompany it

i love my essential oils - i've been burning a blend of

orange oil, roman chamomile and clary sage

it makes me feel better

i love to read

missing my grown kids and their kids

i wonder if i'll ever get scrapbooking again ...

i don't really want to - but think i should.

2 little pudgies

Brad and Sierra took a little stroll down memory-lane

the other day

when they pulled out old photo albums.

I just couldn't resist doing a quick blog about this picture.

These two have spent their lives together

watching out for each other

getting in trouble together

cheering each other on

Just a couple of fun memories:

#1 When Sierra was new on her feet - just able to pick up some speed

the two of them hopped off the back pew at church

while Brad & I were distracted,

snuck under the bench

then took off in opposite directions - each taking a side aisle

and up onto the stand

from there, they crossed each other and ran back down

opposite sides

They were so super-fast that no one could catch them

The really bad part:

they were laughing nice and loud the whole time

#2 One day I was on the phone with a very long-winded acquaintance

it got very quiet .. which was my excuse to get off the phone

i check on the kids and surprisingly, they were just sitting around, being good

So I got back on the phone

no sooner did this acquaintance start to talk

and i hear:

*FLUSH*

*giggle, giggle, giggle*

"now you do it!"

*FLUSH*

*belly laugh, belly laugh*

I rushed in to find Bryan and Sierra giving each other swirlies

Yup - tho no longer pudgies, they are still inseparable.

This next quote is a sentence shared by Elder Snow after talking about the trying times we live in - how so many are wanting security.

"The faith to hear God is real security."

I'm not sure exactly the context of this next quote. But I know what I was thinking: My thoughts were led to the many priesthood blessings I've had; the many hours spent praying and pondering regarding different situations I've been in. I've thought of my various trials and the emergence from them. I've always known "this too shall pass". But I've also known that the real test is to emerge from the trial having learned and grown. This quote gives me the formula:

"We can only learn the lesson if we'll act according to faith."

Saturday night was a question-answer session. One brother talked about President Benson's quote about beginning a serious study of The Book of Mormon and the promises accompanied with that. He then asked how we know if we are involved in a "serious study":

"A serious study of the scriptures is when you seriously put studying the scriptures first."

Sister Tammy Snow

This next quote came from Elder Snow when someone asked about why people are born into different situations in life. I like this quote and will share it with my children everytime they say "It's not fair":

"When you treat your children equally, you can't treat them the same."

The end of the Saturday night session, Elder Snow talked about submission and acceptance of God's will:

"I've given up trying to re-write the script. Resist the temptation. There's something in it for us."

Finally, my favorite:

I felt the Spirit.

I feel changed.

I feel a desire to let go of temporal concerns and focus on the Lord's abudance (as referenced by Sister Snow ... see Moses 7:16)

There is nothing that can compare with sitting in a congregation of hundreds to sing the hymns. Singing together is beautiful.

* Sometimes I roll my eyes over the phone

* When I was 7 or 8 one of my friends told me that if you pretend to say "hey" while smiling, your smile will look better. I had a very crooked smile till I tried that trick. Now 40+ years later I often find myself saying "hey" when a picture is taken.

* When exercising I only cheat on the crunches

* I can't cook or bake without sampling the entire time. This means I never want to eat my own meal.

* I really believe clothes smell better when line-dried

* I'm currently disillusioned with the state of Henderson's police force (that's being nice)

* I'd rather watch a childhood Disney movie or The Sound of Music at home than see a new flick at the theater

* Although I feel like a kid in most ways, I've truly become a grown-up when it comes to amusement parks. I'd rather do taxes than go on one of those rides.

* I used to "call in sick" so I could finish a good novel. Now I just stay up late then suffer the next day.

* My kids are ALL smarter than me.

* I still have to check to make sure the doors are locked more than once before bedtime

(the guy who hired Brad as GM, then a year later let him go)

[yeah, the economy pooped out ... but he mislead us about the condition of the company and knew all along that it was most likely a temporary job for Brad but never shared that with us - all while we purchased a home, closed the door to Alaska, etc... he was less than honest with us]

I think with the disposal of this sad plant

I can dispose of negative feelings.

R & his wife had this delivered to our home the day we closed

I've nurtured this baby, trimmed it,

watered it, moved it ...

finally about a month ago I just left it alone.

Sad, I know.

A week or so ago I put it outside and let it freeze.

This morning I dumped it in the garbage and said farewell.

The garbage truck should be here any minute.

but time doesn't permit.

30 years ... WHAT!

I don't know how this can be,

seeing that I'm only 27 ...

but

30 years ago tonight Brad and I met for the 1st time.

He and Eager-Sensei greeted the 6 of us:

their new group of students.

My brother, Bruce, dropped me off at the MTC and it was a breeze for him -

a little teary and very much an adventure for me!

I remember that first night in the classroom ...

Carol Dawn Ward and Marcia Flanders were my companions

we were joined by Scoville Choro, Malmrose Choro and Powell Choro.

We learned to pray in Japanese.

Sort of.

And through the weeks I learned that whenever we were sick of studying,

we just had to ask Brad:

"Chapman Sensei, will you tell us a mission story?"

Now, 30 years later, if we want to distract him we use the same technique.

Although I was strictly mission-oriented, I have to admit

I did notice his gorgeous eyes!

We had a great last-shopping-day with Caci.

Brad spent the morning at work;

Bry & Az were in Idaho with Brookie, Steven & Gage;

so of course, the rest of us went shopping!

Caci was on the look-out for a

little black dress

that will serve her well for business functions

in The Ukraine

and will grow with her :)

We found one!

So of course, we needed jewelry to go with it

We ate lunch at Costco

(the samples filled us up!)

then headed out for

CACI'S ULTRA-SOUND

We got Trevor on the phone (Trev's in The Ukraine)

so we all heard the tech announce:

"IT'S A GIRL!"

At 17 weeks, she's already gorgeous!

What a blessing - to have a daughter-in-law who actually wanted me there for the unveiling!

Sierra auditioned for

and participated in her high school's idol talent show

She accompanied herself singing

"A Thousand Miles"

and was

AMAZING

I am SO proud of Sierra!

I'm also so thankful for Caci & Jace's support in being there

and

very, very grateful for our Campbell family ...

they showed up in full force to support Sierra.

Sierra also had friends show up to cheer her on!

We are blessed :)

In some ways I think I am so, so lucky ...

i ALWAYS get a close parking spot, no matter how crowded the lot is;

i come from a lucky family: my mother once

guessed the exact # of nuts & bolts in a jar

and won a truck and camper;

i ALWAYS pick out the best chocolates in the assorted box -

no taking bites & putting them back for me!

BUT

sometimes I think I am terribly UNlucky ...

take tonight:

We put Bryan and Azure on a plane bound for Idaho

they were to spend 4 days there, enjoying Brooke, Steve & Gage

and filling a babysitting need

(YAY! Brooke got the internship she wanted!)

The babysitting starts tomorrow at 8 am

Being the seasoned travelers that they are, we left them at the security gate

and asked them to call when they boarded ...

4 hours later we were picking them back up and bringing them home

Their flight was cancelled.

Why was I surprised?

1st of all, it included airplanes

secondly, Brooke was involved

all of us Chapmans are unlucky when it comes to flights -

but no one beats Brooke

well, maybe Sierra does ...

but it really doesn't matter:

the combination of Chapmans + flying = delays, lost bags, damaged baggage, cancellations, etc ...

it just does.

luck???? hmmm ....

actions lead to understanding

One of my conversations with Brooke last week

left me with a topic to ponder...

We know that Adam offered sacrifices long before he understood why

Nephi made plates of ore "... for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not."

1 Nephi 9:5

The scriptures are full of examples of obedience, followed by

understanding, or testimony.

So often

most often

I want to understand why or I want to already have a testimony on a topic before I act. But that's not the Lord's way.

Actions first, testimony later.

Faith before miracles.

In my head, I often know a certain action is the right action ....

I am determined to do better following that knowledge

When I do so, I know that my testimony of that principle will become unshakeable.

i just realized last week that this year (2010) we'll have 3 teenagers at home!

What a great year!!!!

I hope Bryan, Sierra and Azure realize that this is the beginning

of the best.

I LOVED my teenage years with my family.

(well, except when the boys were being jerks ...

Bruce & Michael, remember when I sent you to your rooms?)

We loved

dating each others' friends

staying up late talking

sharing music

going to dances & parties together

sports (playing and cheering on the player)

and "on and on" (remember Stephen Bishop's song?)

truly, GOOD TIMES

the power of prayer

Several things have turned my thinking

to prayer

these last few days.

In Women's Conference, Sister Leavitt said something like:

"What do we do when we don't know what to do?

We drop to our knees and we pray."

Brooke and I were having a phone conversation last week.

(we talk every day ... YAY for me!)

One of the things our conversation turned to was Alma the Younger

and the fact that his big change-of-heart came about

because of the prayers of his father.

It appears that Alma didn't even know that he wanted to change

until his father's prayers were answered.

I use prayer on a regular basis for my personal benefit.

I need to be comforted

I need to be directed

I need to be inspired

I'm grateful - oh so grateful! for the power of prayer in my personal life.

But I also know that there is great power in prayer

when offered in behalf of others.

There are important, even vital things that have

come about in my life and in the lives of those I love

because of the prayers of someone else.

The heartfelt prayers of a parent for a child

seem to elicit a near-immediate, heartfelt response

from our loving Father.

This I know to be true.

I had a hard time picking just a few pictures of Bryan.

He's AMAZINGLY ADORABLE!

Let me tell you about Bryan ...

Bryan, age 1

As a baby, bryan was so chubby we had to clean the rolls on his neck with q-tips daily!

Brand-spankin'-new, he was a snuggler.

I don't know if he loved his sarongs or his paci-s more.

One thing is for sure:

he has always been completely attached to his parents and siblings.

He was 2-years old before we could leave him with a babysitter without Trevor or Brooke with him. As long has he had some sarongs, a handful of paci-s and a family member, he was always content.

Bryan was a month shy of 2-years-old when we signed his adoption papers.

That was THE LONGEST 2 years of my life!

2 months later, he was sealed to us in the Hawaii temple.

I anticipated a heavenly experience ... I knew angels would be present and I was sure it would be absolutely celestial.

Bryan screamed the whole time.

But we walked out of the temple that day a complete family.

I can hardly believe 17 years have passed!

No longer rolly-polly, Bryan is still tender-hearted and snuggly.

Babies and animals LOVE Bryan.

One would think that headphones have actually grown out of Bryan's ears or are surgically attached. (I guess they've taken the place of pacifiers)

I used to kiss that dimple daily. Now I have to sneak a kiss whenever I can ...

but he's still a little snuggler.

Bryan is:

amazingly smart

generous to a fault

Inspiring Conference

I just came from our Stake Relief Society

Women's Conference.

I have to admit that when I was laying in bed,

revelling in the fact that I could stay there all day if I wanted,

then remembered we had Women's Conference

I was tempted to try to forget.

Boy am I glad I didn't!

This conference was meant for me.

I haven't been so inspired in a long time ...

Our amazing Stake RS Pres'y invited 2 older sisters to speak.

Sister Leavitt and Sister Kesterson must both be in their 80s.

The wisdom they shared was almost more than I could take in.

But at the same time, I felt like I could sit at their feet for days ...

It was a tearful day for me.

It's an interesting thing - to be moved to tears by the Spirit -

not out of sadness or joy or anything other than being divinely taught.

We had 2 musical #s. Both amazing.

But it took only a few words coming from my friend, Rebecca,

in her song

for the tears to flow steadily.

After today I am more committed to:

* Remember the power of prayer

* make time for relationships outside of my home

* recognize the Savior in my life

I am grateful for inspired leaders and friends with talents.

BIGGEST LOSER CONTEST

our family is getting fit!

Besides watching our food intake

(sometimes it looks really pretty!)

We're all exercising.

Every morning after driving the kids to seminary,

Azure and I workout with Jillian Michaels

It's a pretty good 20-minutes

inducing sore muscles and sweat.

(So glad I have a partner in Azure!)

Azure's pretty cute with her fashionable azure-blue 2 lb weights.

Brad does his own workout with 5lb weights later in the day.

Sierra does her 20-minutes on the eliptical after school

and here's what's really impressive:

Bryan gets up at 5am so he can get in 20 minutes of boxing

before seminary.

He's a pretty fast shower-taker, so it works.

Added benefit:

The rhythm of his boxing is my alarm clock.

Here's to hoping we're all VERY fit on April 11th when Brooke's contest ends!

what i do after juicing

I've become a big juicer.

Here are some of the benefits:

* the body can quickly absorb larger amounts of nutrients from juices than from solid foods because the process of digestion that is necessary when you eat whole foods is bypassed.

* it is an easy way to get beneficial enzymes, which are primarily found in raw foods, into the body.

* Enzymes are also involved in metabolism, so one of the more valuable health benefits of juicing is that it can increase metabolic rate.

* Juicing also ensures that the body is getting sufficient amounts of phytochemicals, substances in plants that are considered among the most powerful ways to fight disease.

* antioxidants and other immune enhancing properties are concentrated in juices.

So anyway, I've been juicing a lot.

I've found a way to use carrot & apple pulp that is really yummy!

I've made some substitution to the following recipe:

Carrot Muffins

If you can’t use the pulp right away, freeze it in a plastic bag and defrost before baking. You can also use grated carrots – equal amounts apply. While I switched to whole wheat flour, you might experiment with other whole grains. Either way, it’s a delicious way to get your veggies and a healthy dose of fiber, starting at breakfast:)

Makes 12

2 Cups whole wheat flour
1 Cup extra virgin olive oil
1/4 cup water
1 Teaspoon sea salt
2 Teaspoons cinnamon
1 Teaspoon nutmeg
2 Teaspoons baking Soda
2 Teaspoons vanilla
3/4 Cup Sucanat or brown sugar
2 Cups carrot pulp

4 medium to large pastured eggs
1 Cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease approximately 12 muffin tins thoroughly. Mix the whole wheat flour, olive oil, water, salt, baking soda, eggs, and sugar first. After the first group of ingredients are blended, add in the remaining ingredients and mix again thoroughly. Put into muffin pan and cook for about 20 minutes. Let cool for about 10 minutes and serve.

I use applesauce instead of olive oil. I also use equal amounts of apple and carrot pulp.

My mother heard me saying how much I want a tortilla press ...

so when some friends of hers were traveling to Vegas

she sent one with them for me

(thanks Mom!)

The result:

SUPER yummy homemade tortillas

filled with sliced avocado

and homemade apricot salsa.

Well, I did it.

I passed up temptation.

I knew there would be the usual goodies

at Amy's house when I arrived this morning.

But I wasn't prepared for an onslaught of

chocolate muffins, french toast muffins,

mini chocolate cakes

and all other sorts of Costco yummies

But I had a little chat with myself

and convinced myself that I really wanted a toned, healthy body

more than I wanted a chocolate treat.

Maybe tomorrow I won't even be tempted ....

last night for my

LAST HOORAH

I made a double batch of tapioca pudding.

I ate a little more than 1/3 of it

I ate till it made me sick

To kick off my 3 months of trying to win I made this amazing salad

with spinach, lettuce, carrots

hearts of palm (super, super yummy and almost no calories)

cauliflower, celery, tomatoes

and I sprinkled a few craisins on it.

I ate the entire confection.

by myself.

Sheesh!

Here I am, brushing thrice and flossing twice

that's every day, you know

and what happens?

Last night a piece of floss broke off between two teeth

So I unwound more floss and started again

This time to get the little stuck strand out

WHAT?

It broke and left even more floss between those 2 teeth!

This was ridiculous - and starting to get painful

Lots and lots of floss later, and some swollen, bleeding gums

I gave up and went to bed

So this morning I zipped to the store and bought what looked like very powerful floss

It broke.

I zipped in to see the dentist who got the floss out for me.

I'm comfortable now.

Just thought you'd like to know.

I have a great library in my home.

My parents instilled in us a love of reading

(at least, all my brothers and sisters love to read, so I figure it came from my parents)

To digress a little:

my teenage years were spent in "the old-old-house"

in West Chester, PA.

(we don't say "Pennsylvania, mind you, we say "pee-ay")

The old-old-house holds many fond memories.

One room (the family room) was amazing:

wood floors, wood walls with built-in bookshelves

and it even boasts an elevator to the master suite.

More about this old-old house on another post.

But that room was FILLED, I tell you, FILLED

with books.

And recliners.

So, back to the present ....

We have, in our family room, some beautiful wood bookshelves filled with books.

Many of the books are beautifiul hard-cover classics

(yup - I collect them, in case you were wondering about a gift for me)

When I was in High School I skipped reading the Classics we were assigned.

(I think I was intimidated by them ... I don't know ... I liked reading other things, just not what I was assigned to read)

So as a very young mother I decided to read them to my kids.

I think I started with Little Women, or maybe Tom Sawyer.

Right now I'm reading what is destined to become one of my favorites:

Good-bye, Mr. Chips and Other Stories

by James Hilton.

I absolutely love this book.

In one of his short stories, "Merry Christmas Mr. Chips"

is a beautiful line:

"... one of the lovely joys of growing old was to add to this list of trivial things one didn't care about, so that one had more time to care for the things that were not trivial."

One of the joys, indeed!

I'm so excited that it's now 2010.

You know when you were a kid and something exciting

was coming up, but you couldn't remember what?

And the anticipation kept you hopping around

all day?

That's how I feel.

I don't know exactly what I'm excited about,

or what anticipation has got me hopping,

but I'm pretty sure it has to do

with the start of the new year.

2010 is going to be AMAZING.

Last night being the last FHE of the year

meant it was our

"bless and release" night

and

time for setting New Year Resolutions

In a nutshell, inspired by Amanda Dickson's talk at EFY 2008,

we write down the ridiculous things we've been hanging onto

for the past year

(people we can't change, situations making us crazy, etc)

take them outside, and as Bry lights them on fire

with his homemade blow torch

we watch them disappear and we

bless & release :)

Thankfully we had Trevor, Caci & Jace with us

and Trevor led us through our goal setting

He had us list 3 6-month goals

2 1-year goals

2 5-year goals

and 3 10-year goals

As overwhelming and daunting as some of those goals may seem, he told us to imagine one of those goals (the one that would have the most positive impact on our lives) being magically achieved over night.

This is the goal we circled.

Then on the other side of the paper we listed what we need to do to accomplish that one goal.

That goal is our aim.

Some of us shared some or all of our goals with each other

and this leads me to the

SWEETEST THING IN THE WORLD:

Brad shared only his circled goal

the one that would be the most joyous

and bring the most positive impact

this was it:

"help Denalee accomplish her goals"

I am blessed.

This year we gave Gage the book,

"When You Take a Mouse to the Movies"

and the stuffed mouse to go with it.

Our tradition is that we write in the book

and paste in a picture.

This is the picture going in his new book.

Christmas Eve we have several traditions.

This is one we don't talk about with others, but is the highlight

of the entire Christmas Season.

(it's good to have secret traditions!)

We try to get FIRST DIBS

on the missionaries for Christmas Eve each year

AND

we invite at least one other

REALLY FUN person over

This year we lucked out with our set of Elders

PLUS their 2 roommates! along with

"NancyTaylor" (all one word, please)

The tradition includes EVERYONE participating

in our little Christmas pagent

(Where am I? I'm the narrator, of course! It's TRADITION)

Christmas Eve the kids all sleep in one room (quite a feat when Trevor & his family, Brooke & her family are visiting!) .... Anyway, Santa makes his delivery upstairs, including stockings (true, in Henderson we don't have an upstairs - but traditionally, it's how we differentiate between the stockings). He also delivers goodies and surprises to the downstairs stockings which the kids can retrieve at any horrid hour of the morning. This keeps them busy for a couple of hours so Mom & Dad can get a little more rest. For those with young kids, really young kids, DON'T THINK THAT WHEN THEY'RE ALL TEEN-AGERS YOU GET TO SLEEP IN! Even with the downstairs stockings to keep them busy, we were up at 4:38 am Christmas morn!

Then they all line up, youngest in front and oldest in back.

Lucky Azure.

It's only when the grandkids

are here that Azure is de-throned.

Since our oldest, Trevor, was a baby, we've taken

the wrapping paper picture.

We've loved watching the pictures zoom out

to include in-laws

then grandchildren

This wasn't our year tho' - we're without our grown kids and their kids

so we're back to just 3

3 GORGEOUS still-living-at-home kids

We have lots more traditions for which there are no pictures:

*french chocolate *ornaments from Grandma & Grandpa Call * puzzles *games *caroling *tournaments *Christmas movies *hugs *santa letters ******

2 fun days & nights

it was a great birthday

it began with BREAKFAST IN BED

compliments of Bryan, Sierra & Azure

Brad took me shopping to add to my Christmas Village

and we came home with

2 new beautiful houses

both great fantasy houses

(we all sit in front of the village at nights with only Christmas tree & village lights on and imagine which house we'd like to live in tonight and which room we'd claim ...)

After FHE we had a quick family shopping trip

for Christmas gifts

then came home to watch

Christmas With The Kranks

and drink hot chocolate from the cool new machine Sierra gave me for my birthday

(Great gifts this year! also got an amazing lotion gift pack from The Body Shop, a spice grinder and an antique spinning chair)

When all of a sudden there was a knock on the door

Greeting me with an ice cream cake (yes - candles too!)

a dozen red roses

balloons galore (minus the balloon that caught on fire)

and a very cute card

and singing at the top of their lungs

was the Campbell Family

What a surprise!!!!

Then tonight we all got together for pizza and caroling

Chris' van held all of us

What a fun couple of nights!
